P1

The key features of a single camera set-up are for example it is much cheaper due to less camera operators so there is less budget spent. It is very convenient due to the fact that you can shoot dialogue between two or more people without them being on set at the same time. Furthermore the environment within the shot can get in the way if using multiple camera’s so you may see things in the background such as mirror’s, other camera’s, etc which may devastate the production.  In addition it makes it much more unproblematic when shooting on location. Moreover it faster to set up a single camera so it reduces the time wasted when filming sections of the productions, also it gives the director more power to be able to control each shot and see it in more detail for better judgment. Another key feature is that it allows the production to flow in an un-sequence procedure allowing to record different scenes before having to change the set and do the role in order.

The ways in which it is different to a multi camera set-up is that multi camera setup is more likely to use up to 7+ camera to film a production to enhance the nimblety of the production.  Multi camera set-up is more overly used in film productions due to the edits and complexity, also it makes it much swifter and easier to film.  Furthermore it allows the producer/manager of the film to be able to switch between camera to camera allowing the viewer to be able to enhance their experience in a sense of them being in the production themselves. Although both set-up’s use the same camera method’s, single camera allows one only to record one scene, whiles multi camera gives the supremacy to record a scene of a character acting from different perspectives and also another scene such as an establishing shot of the surrounding all at the same time to save time which reduced the cost of the production.
Single Camera gives more freedom in which you operate it with, also the environment could be very beneficial if it was a small room for example due to it being more smoother to record the surrounding and scenes with not much haste. In addition when shooting each scene and angle independently you have more choice and liberty to control every aspect for each shot such as lighting, props etc. Although using a single camera may seem cheep due to having to use one operator it is much more expensive than using a multi-camera set-up due to having to record each camera angle in a scene.

An advantage of using single camera setup is that it much cheaper that multi camera’s and it is more likely to attract producers with a low budget. Another advantage is that when using one camera you don’t have to worry about other camera’s in the background being in the way when filming.
In addition when using a single camera it provides you with less time spent on editing the film because there will be only one camera consisting the footage. An additional advantage is that it gives the camera men and producer time to explore and record different parts of the production without having to record in systematic order.

The disadvantages of using a single camera is that it takes a certain amount of time to record from scene to scene because the camera man or whom ever is operating the camera may have to be filming the same scene contiously from different angles to build a contrast and an effect on that pacific view. Also another disadvantage can be the time wasted in post-production, this may affect the saving’s you have earned whiles shooting the actual production.

The situations in which it would be better to use a multi camera set-up are when recording live scene’s or events for example weddings, parties, live show’s etc. This is due to the fact that gives your final product and edge and helps it to stand out. It allows the videographer can create a completed project instantly ready to be duplicated or broadcasted since you are capable to edit whiles shooting. For example the show Everybody loves Raymond is a quite a popular well known sitcom, multi camera setup benefit’s the show because it allows each scene to be generated much faster and get every detail of characters from different angles. It permit’s the camera men to switch from character to character much faster & record each scene with high acceleration where prop’s and appearances of characters will not differ during the broadcast.

Underneath are selective programmes which I have selected due to the effectiveness in which single camera set-up have benefited the productions.
·         Peep Show (2002–),
·          My Name is Earl (2005–2009)
·         The Middle (2009-)
·          Modern Family
·          Malcolm in the Middle (2000–2006)
·          Scrubs (2001–2010)

A single camera set-up would not work for a new programme is because a single camera is not intestinally created for live shows/programmes that are broadcasted every day. Possible you could miss shots during the show and it would be impossible to go back and re-take that shot, whilst with a multi-camera you are able to take minimum of several shots at the same time making it less likely for you to miss some shots. In addition if editing it makes it much harder.
